A Jazz Night at Txispa

On 24 July, coinciding with Jazzaldia, Txispa steps away from its lunchtime routine and opens after dusk for a jazz night at Txispa. The setting is Tetsuro Maeda‘s fire-driven kitchen, where a decade at Asador Etxebarri and his own Japanese sensibility have shaped a style of grilling that earned a Michelin star within six months of opening and a place among the most sought-after tables in the Basque Country. On this night, that command of embers and produce meets live music: Japanese pianist Masaki Hayashi performs while the grill works in the background, in an evening that brings together two arts of precision, that of the keys and that of the fire. A short tasting menu and a free-flowing bar of drinks and snacks, in collaboration with Suntory, complete the offering.

The pianist

Born in Tokyo in 1978 and trained at Keio University, Masaki Hayashi plays a chamber jazz that is delicate and contemplative, closer to the impressionism of Debussy than to any club swing. His music is built from rubatos that breathe and silences weighed as carefully as the notes. In the intimacy of Txispa, he does not fill the space so much as draw it.

The Suntory bar

The drinks are in the hands of Suntory, the Japanese house that has turned whisky into an art of precision and has long served as a patron of music. Through the night, the free-flowing bar will weave the threads between stage and table, between Japan and the valley, echoing the restraint and precision of Maeda’s own kitchen.

What the evening includes

The experience brings together three elements conceived for the occasion. A short tasting menu, created by Tetsuro Maeda exclusively for this night and served with its own drinks pairing. A free-flowing bar of drinks and snacks in collaboration with Suntory, running throughout the evening. And, at the heart of it all, a live jazz piano concert performed by Masaki Hayashi.
